Abstract
Purpose To investigate the clinicopathological characteristics and recurrence rate of atypical meningioma ( AM ). Methods The clinicopathologic data, MRI, morphological features and immunohistochemical characteristics were reviewed in 16 cases of AM. The survival and recurrence were observed. Results There were 6 males and 10 females. The age range was from 24 ~77 years with mean of 57 years. The tumor most commonly occurred in facies convexa cerebri, falx cerebri and longitudinal sinus, and headache presented as a main symptom. Microscopically, AM was characterized by high mitotic activity ( 5/10 HPF ), hypercellularity, high ratio of nucleus/cytoplasm, and prominent nucleoli, and accompanied by localized necrosis. The mean Ki-67 proliferation index was 14. 3% . All the cases showed positive staining for vimintin and most of cases expressed EMA ( 14/16 ). Fifteen cases got follow up data, showing that recurrence was in 7 cases, and two died 3 years after operation, and recurrence rate was 43. 8% . Conclusion AM is a highly recurrent meningoma with high mitotic activity, hypercellularity, focal necrosis and high proliferation index.关键词
