Abstract

Saturated adsorptive activated carbon was regenerated by microwave-ultrasound combined treatment. The effects of microwave power, ultrasound power and time on the regeneration efficiency were studied by orthogonal experiment with phenol solution as the model of phenolic effluent. The results indicate that the factors affecting the regeneration are put in order: microwave power>ultrasound power>time. The regeneration efficiency of the activated carbon can reach 95.8% under the optimum conditions of microwave 400 W, ultrasound 200 W and reaction time 4 min. The adsorption performances of the activated carbon for phenol before and after the treatment were investigated. The adsorption before the treatment accords with Langmuir isothermal adsorption with the saturated adsorption capacity of 156.6 mg/g, and the adsorption after the treatment accords with Freundlich isothermal adsorption with multilayer adsorption. Compared with only microwave treatment or ultrasound treatment, the microwave-ultrasound combined treatment can improve the phenol adsorption efficiency by 35% and 200%, respectively.
