Abstract
Objective To detect the expressions of Annexin-1 and vascular endothelial growth factor C (VEGF-C) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCCs) and paraneoplastic normal squamous epithelium. Methods The expressions of Annexin-1 and VEGF-C in 80 cases of ESCCs and 80 cases of the corresponding paraneoplastic normal squamous epithelium were measured by immunohistochemistry S-P method. Results Annexin-1 was positively expressed in 67 cases (83.75%) of paraneoplastic normal squamous epithelium, and in 31 cases (38.75%) of ESCCs, there existed significant difference between them (P<0.05). There were no significant correlations of the decreased expression of Annexin-1 with the age, sex, differentiation, the depth of invasion, and lymph node metastasis (P > 0.05). The VEGF-C was positively expressed in 57 cases (71.25%) of ESCCs, and in 37 cases (46.25%) of paraneoplastic normal squamous epithelium, there existed significant difference between them (P< 0.05). The increased expression of VEGF-C was not correlate with the age, sex, differentiation, and the depth of invasion (P > 0.05), but was correlated with lymph node metastasis (P < 0.05). The expression of Annexin-1 was negatively correlated with VEGF-C (r =-0.596, P<0.05). Conclusions The low expression of Annexin-1 and over expression of VEGF-C in the ESCCs indicate that they may be used in the early diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis in ESCCs.
