摘要

Abstract

Objective To investigate the serum level of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid artery in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and their relationship. Methods Serum levels of VEGF in 54 SLE patients (SLE group) and 28 healthy controls (control group) were detected by ELISA and IMT of carotid artery was measured by ultrasonography. Serum levels of lipids and creatinine were measured routinely. According to SLEDAI scores, SLE patients were divided into active SLE and inactive diseases. Results Levels of VEGF and value of IMT were higher in SLE group than in control group (P < 0.05). VEGF level and IMT value were higher in active SLE than in normal controls (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01). The value of IMT in active SLE was higher than that in inactive diseases (P < 0.01). VEGF level was positively correlated with IMT (r = 0.683 , P < 0.01). Conclusions VEGF may be involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in SLE patients and it can be regarded as a nontraditional risk factor for predicting atherosclerosis.
