Abstract

Objective To evaluate the outcome of modified meibomian gland massage combined with health education and nursing care in treatment of meibomian gland dysfunction ( MGD ). Methods One hundred and eight MGD patients with ocular surface discomfort were divided, by patients' whishes, into groups modified ( n = 68, given modified meibomian gland massage), traditional ( 11= 40, given traditional meibomian gland massage). Patients were given related health education and guidance. Massage length of time, process and results were compared between 2 groups. Results The length of time of meibomian gland massage of traditional group was ( 15. 0 ±3. 5 ) mill, that of modified was ( 2. 2 ± 2. 5 ) mill, the difference was significant ( P<0. 01 ). Ocular discomfort symptom between the two groups, the difference was not significant ( P > 0. 05 ). The ocular discomfort symptom disappeared within 5 mill after massage. The eyelid heaviness feeling alleviated in 58 patients. Eye redness, foreign body sensation, photophobia and other ocular discomfort symptoms relieved obviously in 2 groups. In traditional group 2 patients had subconjunctival hemorrhage, 1 had acute conjunctivitis on the next day. Conclusion Modified meibomian gland massage in MGD treatment, easy to learn with good effect and shortening greatly treatment time, reducing discomfort feeling, is worth generalizing.
