Abstract

An anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic (AOA) operation process was employed to enrich denitrifying phosphorus-accumulating bacteria ( DPB) and achieve the simultaneous phosphorus and nitrogen removal in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) in order to improve the removal efficiency of nitrogen and phosphorus in the sewage. The results show that aerobic phosphate uptake can be inhibited effectively, and nitrification reaction is hardly influenced when methanol is used as carbon source (25-40 mg/L) in the aerobic phase. Furthermore, denitrifying denitrification phosphorus-removal can be realized simultaneously in the next anoxic phase. After the SBR is operated stably for more than 10 months, the average removal efficiencies of total nitrogen and phosphorus are 82. 5% and 92. 1% when influent NH4+ -N and PO4 3- -P are 30 mg/L and 15 mg/L, respectively. Phosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) can utilize nitrite as an electron acceptor and the ratio of DPB in total PAOs is 44. 8%. AOA operation process is more beneficial for accumulating DPB compared with A2O ( anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic) operation process.
