Controlling LC-Tank amplitudes based on constant drain-source voltages

Abstract
According to the principle of voltage-limited and current-limited regimes,an amplitude control for wideband LC-VCOs (inductor capacitor voltgage-controlled oscillators) based on constant drain-source voltages was proposed, whose idea was to adjust the tail biasing voltage based on the drain-source voltage variations, in order to avoid the wideband LC-VCO working in voltage-limited regime and improve the phase noise and save the power. When the proposed amplitude control was used for a LC-VCO with tuning frequency from 1. 52 GHz to 3. 20 GHz, the phase noise were -77. 0 dBc/ Hz and -118. 4 dBc/Hz at frequency offsets of 10 kHz and 600 kHz from a carrier frequency of 3. 2 GHz, which are 8 dB and 1. 4 dB lower than that of LC-VCO without amplitude control. Besides, the maximum power consumption of this LC-VCO is 8. 6 mW.关键词
