Reliability and Validity of Chinese Version of Brief Symptom Inventory in High School Students

Abstract
Objective: To examine the reliability and validity of Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) in a sample of high school students. Methods: A total of 1284 high school students were asked to complete the Chinese version of the Brief Symptom Inventory and the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90). The internal consistency, mean interior correlation coefficients, test-retest, construct validity and criterion related validity of BSI were analyzed. Results: The internal consistency reliability for the total scale was 0.96, and for the nine factors ranged from 0.64 to 0.82. The item-subscale correlation coefficients for the total scale was 0.29, and for the nine factors ranged from 0.26 to 0.44. The test-retest reliability coefficient for the total scale was 0.73, and for the nine factors ranged from 0.39 to 0.80. The correlation coefficients between BSI total scores and nine factors scores ranged from 0.39 to 0.80. The correlation coefficients among nine factors of BSI ranged from 0.49 to 0.73. The results of confirmatory factor analyses showed that GFI=0.88, NFI=0.87, CFI=0.87, χ2/df= 3.76, RMSEA=0.05. The correlation coefficients between BSI and SCL-90 ranged from 0.48 to 0.99. Conclusion: The Chinese version of the BSI with acceptable psychometric quality, can be applied to comparative studies of mental health level of high school students.关键词
