Facial Artery Island Flap Reconstruction Tongue Defects in Oral Cancer Patients

Abstract
Objective: To review the feasibility and effects applying facial artery island flap for immediate reconstruction of tongue defect.Methods: From January 2009 to January 2012, facial artery island flap of submandibular area were used to repair the tongue defect after radical operation of oral cancer in 12 patients (7 males and 5 females).Follow-up period was 6-36 months.Vascular supply of the flap, the appearances and function were observed.These patients' general condition and tumor recurrence were checked regularly.Results: Eleven flaps survived completely.One flap showed partial necrosis.Appearance and texture of the tongue were satisfied.The speech and swallowing functions were found to be ideal.Cervical recurrence was found in 1 case.Conclusion: Facial artery island flap of submandibular area is an ideal choice and is a simple and reliable flap, which is suitable to repair partial tongue defect after radical operation.关键词
