Abstract

In orthotropic steel bridge deck, the mutual effects between the crossbeam web and the longitudinal rib may be resulted because of many factors, among which both the bending-shearing effect of crossbeam web and the in-plane supporting effect of crossbeam web on the longitudinal rib belong to in-plane effects, while both the unsymmetrical loading effect and the relative longitudinal displacement effect belong to out-of-plane effects. Through comparative study on principal tensile stresses of all investigated points of orthotropic steel bridge deck using longitudinal rib bulkhead and not using longitudinal rib bulkhead under the four effects, some conclusions are obtained: 1) Under the action of in-plane effects, using longitudinal rib bulkhead can enhance anti-fatigue performance of longitudinal rib web near the end of weld joint between crossbeam web and longitudinal rib, but will increase the cracking possibility of the crossbeam web. 2) Under the action of out-of-plane effects, using longitudinal rib bulkhead has little effect on fatigue performance of orthotropic steel deck near the end of weld joint between crossbeam web and longitudinal rib.
