Water - blocking Technology by Using Foam in a Horizontal Well of a Reservoir with Edge Water

Abstract

The paper presents the study on water - blocking technology by using foam in a horizontal well placed near edge water by means of numerical simulation for the development mechanism of the combination of vertical wells and horizontal wells. When edge water invasion occurs and water cut reaches a certain level, nitrogen foam is injected into the horizontal well under high pressure to delay water invasion. The study shows that foam injected in a vertical well can't effectively block edge water invasion due to around flow and however foam injected in a horizontal well can effectively block edge water invasion because foam injected in a horizontal well can form a narrow foam belt. Dimensionless distance between edge water and horizontal well, dimensionless vertical distance and dimensionless length of a horizontal well are optimized by the orthogonal design method. As a result, the optimized scenario can get a production gain by 1. 55 × 104m3 within 4 periods compared with a case in which water blocking measures are not taken. The feasibility of injecting foam in a heterogeneous edge - water reservoir is studied by adding a high permeability zone in the reservoir. The simulation result shows that foam can effectively block water invasion, can make water invasion profile more uniform and can effectively improve the development of the reservoirs with edge water.
