Abstract

Objective To study the effects of volatile oil from pepper artemisia leaves on CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells in murine autoimmune orchitis mice. Methods Totally 80 male BALB/c mice were randomly divided into 4 groups (normal saline group, model group, olive oil group, and pepper artemisia group). After model making, each group received gavage three days before the surgery, and for 24 days after the surgery (saline group received only the gavage, but no operation). CD4+CD25 + regulatory T cells in the peripheral blood were detected by flow cytometry 3 and 9 weeks after the surgery. Results Three weeks after the surgery, the percentage of peripheral blood CD4+ CD25+ regulatory T cells in model group, olive oil group and pepper artemisia group was significantly lower than that in saline group (P<0.05), but the differences among the first three groups were not significant (P>0.05). Nine weeks after the operation, the percentage of peripheral blood CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells was significantly lower in model group and olive oil group than in saline group (P<0.05); however, pepper artemisia group and saline group did not differ significantly (P>0.05). Conclusion Pepper artemisia can increase the percentage of CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells, which exert immunity-regulatory effects on autoimmune orchitis mice.
