Abstract

Function safety is one of the research areas of modern vehicle. It is also a competition tool of car manufacturers. The function safety includes the requirement in communication function. The communication protocol currently used in more than 90% cars all over the world is CAN. But there are two fatal faults discovered. They are high residual error rate and long quasi bus off and real bus off time. The paper analyses the problem a step further. The corrupted data may be 33 times larger or smaller than the original data in worst case. The failure rate due to quasi bus off may be 16. 8/h when bit error rate is 10-5 with bus utility of 40 % , working in 500 kbps and average frame length of 100 bits. If the application accepted a corrupted data and then the bus off faults stopped the correction of new data, the application will work in wrong input for a long time. This is very dangerous.
