Abstract

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary vitamin E level on growth performance , immune function and antioxidant capacity of Lingnan yellow-feathered broilers aged from 22 to 42 days. One thousand four hundred and forty 22-day-old Lingnan yellow-feathered male broilers were randomly allocated to six treatments with six replicates per treatment and 40 birds in each replicate. Birds were fed the corn starch-soybean meal based diet (containing vitamin E 3. 59 mg/kg) supplemented with vitamin E at the levels of 0 (control) , 5, 10, 20, 40, or 80 mg/kg, and reared in indoor floor pens with ad libitum access to water and pellet feed for a period of 3 weeks. The nutrient levels of all diets were the same except vitamin E. The results showed that vitamin E supplementation tended to reduce average daily feed intake of broilers (P = 0.051). There were no differences in average daily gain, feed to gain ratio, carcass traits, the indexes of spleen and thymus between treatments (P >0.05). Compared with the control group, adding 80 mg/kg vitamin E increased the index of Bursa of Fabricius (P < 0.05), adding 10, 20, 40 and 80 mg/kg vitamin E decreased serum tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a) content (P <0. 05) , adding 5 and 10 mg/kg vitamin E increased serum glutathione peroxidase activity by 16. 93% and 24. 90% (P <0.05) , respectively, and adding 20 mg/kg vitamin E increased serum total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity (P <0. 05). The supplementation of 5, 10, 40 and 80 mg/kg vitamin E increased hepatic a-tocopherol content (P <0. 05) , and adding vitamin E reduced malondialdehyde content (P <0.05). The supplementation of 10 and 20 mg/kg vitamin E elevated T-SOD activity in breast muscle (P <0. 05). In conclusion, only considering growth performance of broilers, it is not necessary to supplement with vitamin E in corn-soybean meal based diets, but based on antioxidant parameters, the optimal vitamin E level estimated by variance analysis and multiple comparisons for broilers aged from 22 to 42 days is from 13. 59 to 23. 59 mg/kg, and based on serum TNF-a content and T-SOD activity, the optimal vitamin E levels estimated by regression analysis are 59. 88 and 46.64 mg/kg, respectively.
