Abstract

Minimum arc time is an important parameter of a circuit breaker. This paper raises an optimization scheme to control the minimum arc time. First, a mathematical model of electric field and flow field in arc chamber is built up based on electric arc theory and fluid mechanics to determine the minimum arc time of the SF6 circuit breaker via simulation; Then, the impact of nozzle structure on the arc time is analyzed, and a scheme for reducing the minimum arc time is proposed by changing the elevation angle at the throat exit. At last, an optimum scheme to achieve the minimum arc time is obtained by comparing five different elevation angles.
