Treatment of organic wastewater with high concentration of salts using coupling process of activated carbon adsorption and Fenton oxidation

Abstract

A coupling process of activated carbon adsorption and Fenton oxidation was applied for the treatment of organic wastewater with high concentration of salts. The impacts of various factors on COD removal efficiencies were investigated by batch systems. The results showed that a maximum COD removal rate of 47. 5% was achieved at an activated carbon dosage of 9.0 g/L, adsorption time of 60 min and pH value of 6.0 when only activated carbon adsorption was used. The Fenton oxidation was applied to treat the wastewater followed the activated carbon adsorption, the COD removal rate reached 84.4% after 30 min reaction when the dosages of FeSO4 · 7H2O and H2O2 were adjusted to 3.0 g/L and 20 mL/L, respectively. Overall, COD concentration of this organic wastewater was reduced from 13 650 mg/L to 560 mg/L, and the removal rate reached 95. 9%. Thus, the coupling process of activated carbon adsorption-Fenton oxidation is suitable for the treatment of the organic wastewater with high concentration of salts.
