Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of injectable chitosan/β-glycerol phosphate (CH-GP) hydrogel loading platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on repairing periodontal defects. Methods This study consisted of 24 class II furcation defect models that were created in the second and third premolars in three healthy male dogs, and divided into groups at random as group A, filled with nothing; group B, filled only with CH-GP hydrogel) group C, filled with PRP; and group D, filled with CH-GP and PRP. The tissue flaps in each group were closely sutured, the gel was injected to the corresponding defected models in groups B, C and D, nothing was done for group A. Eight days postoperatively, the length of newborn alveolar bone (NAB), newborn cementum (NO and newborn periodontal ligaments (NPL) were measured. Results Histologically, the length of NAB, NC and NPL in groups C and D was significantly different as compared with that in group A (F = 6. 54 —11. 37,q = 3. 65 — 9. 84,P<0. 05) and that of the differences between groups C and D were significant as well (q = 3. 12 — 8. 26,P<0. 05) , but no significant differences were noted between groups A and B in terms of the above items (P>0. 05). Conclusion The CH-GP hydrogel loading with PRP can effectively promote the regeneration of periodontal tissue.
