Abstract

Suckers of Salacca zalacca were air layered in three areas of different rainfall frequencies, namely Dingan County, Chengmai County and Wenchang City of Hainan. The results showed that the suckers layered in Wenchang City of Hainan had a larger rooting rate and rooting number than the suckers layered in Dingan County and Chengmai County, because the rainy frequency of Wenchang City was the lowest in the three areas. Suckers of three rattan plams, i.e. Daemonorops margaritae (Hance)Becc, Calamus simplicifolius Wei and Calamus nambariensis Becc.var xishuangbannaensis SJ.Pei et S. Y. Chen, were air layered in Guangzhou. The results showed that the suckers scrapped above the base of sheath didn't have any roots. With the concentration of ABT#1 rooting power increasing, the rooting rate and rooting number of D. margaritae rose at the beginning, then went down, and got its best value when the concentration was 1 500 mg/L. Among the three rattan palms, the highest rooting rate and the longest roots were found in the suckers of C. nambariensis var xishuangbannaensis, the largest rooting number was found in the suckers of C. simplicifolius. But the rooting rate and rooting number were not ideal because of less rainfall frequency during air layering , the highest rooting rate and rooting number was only 40% and 1.7 respectively. It was implied that water should be supplied during air-layering.
