Abstract

As one of the large- scale energy storage technologies, Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) not only is an effective way of power peaking, but also provides efficient use of wind and other renewable energy and new solution for smart grid construction. System performance can be evaluated through exploring the thermodynamic mechanism within the CAES system, which can provide new ideas for system optimization at the same time. For the world's first CAES power plant - Huntorf plant, this paper conducted a process simulation using Aspen Plus software, performed an in-detail thermodynamic performance analysis, and then pointed out that the exergy loss of the combustion chamber and exhaust accounted for a large proportion of the total exergy loss. In response to this problem, an optimized system was proposed by adding a regeneration process to the original systems and the performance improvement of the optimized system was revealed by the comparison of exergy analysis. Finally, as the exit temperature of combustor changes, the performance regularities of two systems were studied, which provide references for the further optimization of CAES system.
