Abstract

Carbonation will not only cause the drop of pH value of concrete, also changes in the pore size distribution and porosity of hardened cement paste, thereby affecting the diffusion process of harmful ions in concrete. It is extremely significant to research the influence of carbonation on the microstructure of concrete. The mercury pressure test and SEM test were carried out at pore structure and morphology of concrete. The results show that carbonation caused a decline of the concrete porosity, but both of the critical pore diameter and most probable pore diameter are increasing, connectivity of the pore is increased. After carbonation, Ca(OH)2 reacts with CO2 to generate a large number of CaCO3, diamond crystals were formed from the carbonized layer. There are connected pores between the crystals.
