Abstract

Objective To explore the level of N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase (NAG) and its clinical significance in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods According to the results of urine micro-protein, sixty -five patients with SLE were recruited and divided into simple tubular involvement group (n =30) and renal tubular as well as glomerular involvement group (n =35). There was no patient with simple glomerular involvement. Twenty-one age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were enrolled as control. NAG was detected by scattering turbidimetry and colorimetry. Results The levels of urinary NAG were significantly higher in the simple tubular involvement group and renal tubular as well as glomerular involvement group compared with the control group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the simple tubular involvement group and renal tubular as well as glomerular involvement. Positive correlation was found between urinary NAG and urinary β2-micro-globulin in 65 patients (r =0.96, P < 0.01). Conclusion Renal tubular lesions can exist alone in patients with lupus nephritis. Urinary NAG is a useful marker for the detection of renal involvement in lupus nephritis.
