Abstract

According to different wellbore instability phenomena,such as lost circulation,hole collapse,blowout,etc,this article analyzes in detail the reason of the borehole instability in the Xujiahe formation in west Sichuan.It is considered that inappropriate well drilling mud density is the fundamental reason for drilled borehole instability.In the process of drilling,formation stress concentrates around the borehole,when the properties of drilling fluid fail to balance the borehole stress effectively,the borehole stability cannot keep up.Using the log data,we calculate the rock mechanics parameters and rock strength parameters,and on this basis calculate the crustal stress and three pressures (formation pressure,burst pressure,caving pressure).We determine a reasonably safe mud density window value for separate block and stratigraphic position.Practical applications in 11 layers of 3 wells show that safe mud density window values calculated with our method are reasonable and acceptable,and may provide effective guidance for drilling engineering design.
