Abstract

Objective: To introduce the principles and methods of quantitative measurement of blood-brain barrier permeability with modified Tofts-Kermode model based on DSC-MRI and application in the differentiation of high-grade and low-grade gliomas. Methods: Blood-brain barrier permeability of both brain lesions and normal tissues from 12 patients with different grades of gliomas were analyzed quantitatively. Parameters(Ktrans, Vp, Kep) were calculated, analyzed statistically and parameter images were reconstructed. Results: Ktrans of high-grade gliomas was larger than that of low-grade gliomas(P=0.031), while no significant difference was found between Vp and KeP of gliomas with different grade(P=0.126, P=0.756). Ktrans was a valuable indicator for the differentiation of high-grade and low-grade gliomas. A sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 58.3% were acquired when Ktrans=0.0274. Ktrans and KeP of gliomas were significantly larger than those of normal brain tissues(P<0.05). Conclusion: Blood-brain barrier permeability can be analyzed quantitatively with DSC-MRI, which represents potential values in diagnosis of gliomas.
