Abstract

The Xiakou section in Xingshan County of Hubei Province,with the well developed Lower and Middle Triassic,abundant in fossils and reliable sedimentary indicators with favorable exposure,is ideal for the study of marine strata in the Upper Yangtze area.According to the stratigraphic division and correlation,the Lower Triassic was divided into the Daye and Jialingjiang Formations,and the Middle Triassic comprised the Badong Formation,with a thickness of 1217.67 m.Limestones dominated the Lower and Middle Triassic,followed by dolomite rocks,and a few karst breccia and clastic rocks were developed in this area.Limestones could be further divided into micritic limestones,vermicular limestones,gravelelast limestones,sandclast limestones,bioclastic limestones and shaly limestones,and dolomite rocks comprised of mierocrystalline-fine crystalline dolomite and particulate dolomite.Based on the comprehensive analyses of lithology,palaeontology and sedimentary structures,five types of sedimentary environment of the Early and Middle Triassic were generally developed in turn,such as open shelf facies,slope facies,open platform facies,restricted platform facies and tidal flat facies,with shoal developed in the open platform.There was a transgression event at Daye Period of the Early Triassic with the sedimentary environment of open platform facies-slope facies,however,the Jialingjiang Formation included four transgressiveregressive cycles with sedimentary environments of open platform facies-restricted platform facies-tidal flat facies.The sedimentary environment of Badong Period of the Middle Triassic was mainly domained by the restricted platform facies.The preliminary analysis shows that the conditions of hydrocarbon source rocks and reservoir rocks of the Lower and Middle Triassic in the study area are rather favorable.
