Abstract

Objective:To investigate the prevalence and drug resistance of pathogens isolated from central venous catheter (CVC) tip specimens.Methods:Microbiologic culture and antimicrobial susceptibility test results from 4281 specimens obtained from central venous catheter tip during Jan 2008 to Dec 2012 were retrospectively analyzed.Results:Among the 4 281 CVC tip specimens,754 (17.6%) were positive with 835 strains of microorganism isolated,of which G+bacteria represented 37.0%,G-bacteria 44.8%,and fungus 18.2%.CVC tip specimens taken from bum ward had a significantly higher positivity and with a trend of increasing positivity annually (P<0.001).The five most commonly isolated microorganisms were Ancinetobacter baumanii (18.0%),Staphylococcus epidermidis (13.4%),Staphylococcus aureus (12.0%),Pseudomonas aeruginosa (9.7%) and Candida albicans (7.5%).Overall,10.2% of catheter tip specimens were polymicrobial.The P.aeruginosa and A.baumanii isolated from CVC tip specimens had higher drug-resistance rates than that reported in other situations.The pathogens isolated from CVC tip specimens taken initially were mostly G+ bacteria,and it turned to mostly G-in specimens taken in the following time and subsequently.Conclusions:A shift in distribution of pathogen strains isolated from CVC tip specimens in our hospital occurs over the past decade.The five most commonly isolated microorganisms were A.baumanii,S.epidermidis,S.aureus,P.aeruginosa and C.albicans.The drug resistance rates of P.aeruginosa and A.baumanii are very high.Measures for prevention of catheter related bacterial infection and colonization should be widely applied.
