Life meaning and well-being in adolescents

Abstract
Objective:To explore the characteristics and relationship of adolescents'sense of life meaning and well-being,in order to provide basis for adolescents'life education.Methods:Totally 1,141 adolescents from different age groups were selected.They were assessed with the Life Attitude Profile Scale (LAPS),the Ryff'Psychological Well-Being Scale (PWBS),the Student Life Satisfaction Scale (SLSS) and Positive-Negative Scale (PANA).The first 27％ and the last 27％ scorers in the LAPS were selected as high-score group and low-score group respectively.Result:The scores of the LAPS [(3.5 ±4.2) vs.(3.8 ±4.7),(3.7 ±4.0) ; Ps ＜0.001],PWBS,SLSS and PANA were lower in the senior high school students than in the junior high school students and the college students.Interaction was found between gender and grade in two dimensions of LAPS,namely,will to meaning (F =3.67,P ＜0.05),life control (F =7.20,P ＜ 0.05) and PANA "positive emotion" (F =4.92,P ＜ 0.05).The scores of PWBS,SLSS and PANA "positive emotion" were higher in those with higher level of life meaning than in those with lower level of life meaning [(4.5 ± 7.6) vs.(3.5 ± 7.0),(3.3 ± 4.0) vs.(2.7 ± 4.1),(3.6 ± 2.5) vs.(2.8 ± 3.8);Ps ＜ 0.01].The PWBS scores were positively correlated with the scores of LAPS "existence of filling","will to meaning","life control","death acceptance",and "purpose of life" (0.11-0.39,Ps ＜0.001).The SLSS scores were positively correlated with the scores of LAPS "existence of filling","purpose of life",and "adoption of suffering" (0.38,0.12,0.11,Ps ＜ 0.01).The score of PANA "positive emotion" was positively correlated with the scores of LAPS "existence of filling","will to meaning",and "life control" (0.25,0.31,0.18,Ps ＜0.001).Conclusion:It suggests that the senior high school students may have lower level of sense of life meaning and well-being,and the sense of life meaning could promote one's sense of well-being.关键词
