Abstract

In order to accurately employ the viscoelastic Poisson's ratio for dynamic response analysis of asphalt pavements under wheel loading,three common approximate methods of viscoelastic Poisson's ratio were comparatively studied.The numerical relationships among the three viscoelastic Poisson's ratios,the time-dependent Poisson's ratio,the incompressible Poisson's ratio and the constant Poisson's ratio,were proposed.Then,a three-dimensional viscoelastic finite element model of an asphalt pavement was derived.The influences of these three approximations of viscoelastic Poisson's ratio on the transverse normal stresses of the asphalt pavement were compared under different temperatures and durations of load.The results show that the incompressible Poisson's ratio always keeps at 0.5,which is applicable for high temperature and low frequency loading; the constant Poisson's ratio always keeps at 0.1,which is suitable for low temperature and high frequency loading; the time-dependent Poisson's ratio varies between 0.1 to 0.5,whose application is unconstrained by temperatures and loading modes.The application of correct approximation of viscoelastic Poisson's ratio bears important implications for researches of flow rutting.
