Statistical Analysis of Patents Relative to Heating Type Smokeless Tobacco Products

Abstract

To help the scientific and technical personnel in tobacco industry better grasp the technical characteristics of heating type smokeless tobacco product,the relevant patents published by State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO)and European Patent Office (EPO)from 2001 to 2012 were statistically analyzed.The results showed that:1) 264 patents in heating type smokeless tobacco products were published by SIPO from 2001 to 2012,including 251 electric heating type patents,8 fuel heating type patents,and 5 physicochemical reaction heating type patents.2) 254 patents in heating type smokeless tobacco products were published by EPO from 2001 to 2012,including 192 electric heating type patents,45 fuel heating type patents,and 17 physicochemical reaction heating type patents.3)27 patents published by SIPO were applied by foreign enterprises,including 24 invention patents,12 of them were applied by Philip Morris Products SA and 5 patents were applied by Japan Tobacco Inc.4) 4 patents were applied by domestic tobacco enterprises in recent 10 years,and all of them were practical new type patents.It meant that the patents in heating type smokeless tobacco products were predominantly owned by foreign tobacco enterprises,especially in the electric heating type containing visible tobacco material.The patents in heating type smokeless tobacco products owned by China tobacco industry were much less,therefore the research and development of heating type smokeless tobacco products should be strengthened in China tobacco industry.
