Automatic Processing in Translation:Semantic Spreading-Activation under the Picture-word Interference Paradigm

Abstract
Two picture naming experiments were designed and performed of English-Chinese and Chinese-English translations with the Picture-word Interference Paradigm under three levels of distracter words (semantically relat⁃ed vs. semantically unrelated vs. zero). In the English-Chinese translation, the naming language was Chinese for English distracter word; in the Chinese-English translation, the naming language was English for Chinese distracter word. It was found that naming reaction time of pictures with two dimensions of picture and distracter word was lon⁃ger than that of pictures with one dimension of 0 distracter word, which shows the subjects’automatic activation, retrieval and processing of semantic meaning of the distracter word in spite of their effort of ignoring its interfer⁃ence. This proves the automatic processing in translation.关键词
