风景园林是人居环境建设的重要内容，而植物是构成风景园林景观的基础。园林植物的重要性得到普遍的认同，在风景园林规划设计行业内的重要地位日益得到重视，园林植物应用在教学、研究和实践上各有发展。但风景园林植物应用领域目前存在研究力量分散，缺少有效的组织，与实践活动缺乏科学引导的问题，这将对风景园林行业的健康成长产生不利影响，进而阻碍风景园林学科的健康发展。因此，风景园林植物应用专业委员会的成立对于风景园林植物应用及风景园林学科的发展和前景，具有极大的必要性和重要性。
