Abstract
In order to discriminate between the synonyms of“convention”and“regulation”and shed some light on the learning and using of synonyms, British National Corpus (BNC), an on-line research platform and SPSS, a statistic software were based on to make a discussion of the differences in fre-quency distribution and collocation between the two words when they are used to denote legal docu-ments. Findings show that adjectives collocating with“convention”are more formal than the ones with“regulation”since“convention”often collocates with serious and important international affairs in diplo-macy. However,“regulation”tends to collocate with adjectives denoting some specific fields or subjects. Meanwhile,“convention”is closely related to verbs dealing with the signing and termination of agree-ments, but“regulation”collocates with verbs used to explain the causes in contracts, documents or agreements in detail.关键词
