Abstract
Objective:To investigate the relationship between serum testosterone and metabolic syndrome(MS)in elderly men. Method:133 elderly men aged 60-89 years were divided into two groups:MS(72 cases)and NMS(61 cases)groups. Serum testosterone,estradiol,triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C),fasting blood glucose,fasting insulin were measured,and insulin sensitivity was evaluated by homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance(HOMA-IR). Serum testosterone and estradiol/testosterone between the two groups were compared,the correlation between serum testosterone and metabolic syndrome were analyzed. Result:Compared between the two groups,serum testosterone level was significantly lower in MS group than that in NMS group,and estradiol/testosterone obviously increased,the difference was statistically significant(P<0.01). Serum testosterone level decreased significantly with MS components increased. Correlation analyses showed that testosterone level was negatively associated with age,waist circumference,body mass index,TG and HOMA-IR in MS group,while it was positively associated with HDL-C. Conclusion:Low serum testosterone level appears to increase the risk for the developments of MS in elderly men.关键词
