Abstract
This paper reports a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) head structure with high stability and low voltage operability,in which many factors to enhance stability and precision are considered:(1)the head structure is designed to possess high symmetry;(2)the vertical piezoelectric inertial slider for coarse approach is designed to be independent with the scan structure,which prevents the instability of the coarse approach motor from entering the scan structure;(3)the more difficult upward stepping (due to gravity) of the coarse approach inertial motor is designed to be driven by the more powerful elongating displacement of the piezoelectric material so as to reduce the operating voltage (thus improving electronic noises and precision),and finally the first <18V vertical stepping STM is implemented;(4)the scan structure is designed to be very small and made of low and similar thermal expansion coefficient sapphire and high purity titanium to cancel thermal drift;(5)the coarse approach inertial slider is implemented by the sliding of polished sapphire balls on polished rods,which can increase the rigidity and reduce the drift of the STM head without increasing the friction forces (thus favoring the implementation of low voltage STM).The performance of the STM is demonstrated by the high quality atomically resolved graphite images obtained in ambient conditions.关键词
