Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) transplantation on expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) protein in rats following spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods Adult rats were randomly divided into group A (sham operation group), group B (DMEM control group), and group C (BMSCs transplantation group). A rat spinal cord compression injury model was established. Rats in groups B and C were injected with BMSCs or DMEM after SCI. Expression of COX-2 and VEGF protein in rats following SCI was detected by Western blot. Results The expression level of COX-2 and VEGF protein was low in group A. The expression level of COX-2 and VEGF protein was significantly higher in group B than in group A and in group C than in group B (P<0.01, P<0.05). Conclusion BMSCs transplantation can up-regulate the expression of COX-2 and VEGF protein in rats following SCI.
