Multiple themes and cohesion--a case study of formal speeches

Abstract
In view of current studies on cohesion, systematic functional grammar was adopt-ed to analyze the role of multiple themes in cohesion based on formal speeches. Findings show that most multiple themes make explicit the relation of the clause to the preceding text and thus make a great contribution to cohesion, and meanwhile cohesion helps multi-ple themes determine the relevance of a message to its textual environment. Moreover, ide-ational themes and interpersonal themes do most cohesive work via cohesive ties, and the cohesive function of interpersonal themes is mainly realized by vocatives.关键词
