Abstract
Many attempts have been done to investigate the effect of friction on ballistic impact response of woven fabrics .It has been shown that friction plays an important role in determi-ning the ballistic impact performance of fabrics .Currently ,there is little fundamental under-standing of impact failure mechanisms in woven fabrics .For example ,what levels of inter-yarn friction are beneficial to energy absorption capacity of the fabrics , how friction affects the stress distributions w hich are crucial important in determining the failure modes of yarns and energy absorption .In this paper ,a detailed study using finite element analysis has been carried out .The purpose of the paper is to study numerically the way in which friction affects the im-pact behaviour of ballistic fabrics and to determine the distribution and magnitude of the stres-ses .The finite element model was created using ABAQUS to simulate the transverse impact onto woven fabrics . <br> The calculated results show that the ballistic impact performance of woven fabrics increa-ses with increasing levels of friction .The stress distributions on the yarns are sensitive to the change of friction between the yarns .Increasing friction between the yarns decreases the stres-ses at the edge of the contact area .Therefore ,the fabric with large friction between the yarns needs longer time to penetrate the yarns relative to the fabric with small friction between the yarns .This will contribute to the increase of energy absorption of the fabric .However ,in-creasing friction between the yarns decreases longitudinal wave velocities and this may reduce energy absorption of the fabric .In addition ,increasing friction between the yarns increases transverse wave velocities which is beneficial to energy absorption of the fabrics .关键词
