Abstract

Both acrylic polymers (PAA) and acrylic/stearyl acrylate copolymers (PSA) containing silicone were prepared by polymerization of γ-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxyl silane (KH-570), acrylic acid (AA) and/or stearyl acrylate (SA) in the presence of lauroyl peroxide (LPO) as initiator and ethyl acetate (EA) as solvent. The structures, particle size and thermostability of the polymers were measured by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), laser particle size analyzer and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The effects of the amount of KH-570 and the solution storage time on the viscosity and transmittance of acrylic polymers containing sili-cone in the aqueous solution were also investigated. The results showed that acrylic polymers containing sili-cone formed core-shel structure due to hydrolysis and self-condensation of KH-570 and then react with acrylic acid (AA) and/or stearyl acrylate (SA) under acidic condition. The particle size of acrylic polymers contain-ing silicone was smal and uniform-distribution. Increasing the amount of KH-570 in polymerization led to an increase firstly and then decrease in the viscosity of acrylic polymers containing silicone, while the transmit-tance of acrylic polymers containing silicone solution decreased as the increase of KH-570 dosage. The solu-tion storage resulted in an increase in viscosity and transmittance of acrylic polymers containing silicone within 30 h and then kept unchanged.
