Abstract

The traditional protection schemes are unsuitable for micro-grid due to the variety of micro-grid topology and fault characteristics in islanding and grid-connecting circumstances. In this paper, an adaptive protection scheme based on identifying the direction of fault current was presented. Real-time topology of the micro-grid was expressed with the path graph of the node tree. The node tree searching process and node path identification algorithm were presented. The searching and identifying results were applied to adaptively set the operation values and time limits. An adaptive protection system based on IEC 61850 was proposed. Simulation results verify the validation of the method. By means of the presented scheme, the relay settings can adaptively track the topology changes of micro-grid in real time.
