Abstract

Promoted potassium carbonate solutions have the potential for large-scale CO2 capture from coal-based power stations. In this paper, the borate-catalyzed CO2 hydration and its effect on potassium carbonate solutions using stopped-flow pH indicator technique and wetted-wall column method was presented. The results show that borate can catalyze the conversion of CO2 into HCO3- via the same fundamental mechanism as the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, and the addition of borate into potassium carbonate solution increases CO2 absorption rate and enhancement factor. Under the condition of liquid-film controlled processes and ion strength effect Considered, the proposed borate catalysis can be used to predict CO2 absorption of borate promoted potassium carbonate solutions well, and will be very useful for separation processes design and operation parameters optimization.
