Abstract

The traditional six-step control method of the brushless DC motor (BLDCM) adopts Y-connection windings to make two conducting phases work in series; the sensorless control of this structure is implemented through detecting the zero-cross point of the non-conducting phase back electromotive force (EMF). Connection in series makes each phase excited with half the potential of bus voltage, and distraction of the neutral point reduces the accuracy of the rotor position signal. To improve these two aspects, the three-phase H-bridge structure has been adopted to BLDCM in this paper. The new structure makes two conducting phases work in parallel; meanwhile the non-conducting phase is cut off from the circuit for back EMF zero-cross detecting. Parallel connection makes each phase excited with full potential of bus voltage, and the non-conducting phase totally switches out from the circuit, which makes the rotor position signal accurate. The theoretical derivation and analysis of the presented method are given. The experimental results of a small inductance prototype with 4 pole pairs shows that the presented sensorless control method could be working well at the speed of 20000r/min.
