Experimental Studies on Switching Impulse Flashover Characteristics of External Insulation and Altitude Correction Methods for±1100kV UHVDC Converter Valves

Abstract
At present, ±1 100 kV is the highest HVDC voltage level in the world. ±1 100 kV HVDC converter valve is a core equipment, and the minimum indoor air gap distance for its external insulation at different altitudes is very important. In this paper, the C-EPRI’s A5000 series ±1 100 kV HVDC converter valve installation was used to carry out switching impulse tests at the SGCC UHVDC test base in Beijing. A switching impulse flashover characteristics curve was acquired. Due to limited conditions, the switching impulse flashover test of converter valve external insulation at high altitude cannot be completed. According to the long air gap switching impulse test results and the previous studies of altitude correction factors referred, the discussion and extraction of the altitude correction factor that is suitable for ±1 100 kV HVDC converter valve external insulation was made in the paper. The minimum air gap distances that are required for a ±1 100 kV HVDC converter valve installation at the defined operating overvoltage levels were calculated for different altitudes according to the switching impulse flashover characteristics curve obtained.关键词
