Abstract

Objective To study effects of sound intensity on temporal resolution in phasic neurons in the inferior collicu-lus (IC). Methods Single unit recording was conducted in 40 adult guinea pigs. Gap stimuli was created by two Gaussian noise bursts that were separated by different gap durations:0, 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, 48 and 96 ms. The minimal gap threshold (MGT) as well as NB2 recovery and first spike latency (FSL) were analyzed under the following sound intensity exposures:minimum threshold (MT)+15 dB, MT+35 dB and MT+55 dB. Results Totally 166 neurons were recorded and data from 90 phasic neu-rons were presented. MGT was 8.81±1.08 ms, 7.08±0.78 ms and 7.11±0.67 ms, and FSL was 7.28±0.15 ms, 5.75±0.14 ms and 5.05 ± 0.13 ms for the three sound intensities respectively. There was no significant difference in MGT, FSL or NB2 recovery among the three groups. Conclusion Sound intensity appears to have no significant effect on temporal resolution of IC phasic neurons in guinea pigs, although the neuron response time shortens as sound intensity increases.
