Significance of E-cadherin, β-catenin expression in the primary gastric carcinomas versus lymph nodal metastases

Abstract
Objective To investigate the expressions of protein E-cad,β-catenin in the primary gastric carcinomas versus lymph nodal metastases,determine their clinical pathologic features and prognosis.Methods Immunohistochemical method was used to determine the expression of E-cad,β-cat in 50 gastric carcinoma specimens and 20 specimens of normal gastric tissues,and analyze their correlation with the clinical pathologic characteristics.Results The positive expression rates of E-cad and β-cat were 40％ (20/50) and 36％ (18/50) respectively,which were all lower than those in normal gastric tissues [100％ (20/20),100％ (20/20),all P ＜ 0.01],respectively.The positive expression rates of E-cad and β-cat were significantly lower in the moderate-low differentiation group 19.23％ (5/26),19.23％ (5/26),infiltration into serosa coat group 30.77％ (12/39),30.77％ (12/39),lymphatic metastasis group 27.27％ (9/33),30.30％ (10/33) than in the well-differentiated gastric group75％ (6/8),75％ (6/8),no infiltration into serosa coat group 72.72％ (8/11),81.81％ (9/11),non-metastatic group 64.70％ (11/17),70.59％ (12/17),(P ＜ 0.01).E-cad expression was positively correlated with β-cat in gastric carcinoma (r=0.836,P ＜ 0.01).The expression of E-cad and β-cat showed no statistical significant difference between primary gastric carcinomas and lymph nodal metastases (P ＞ 0.05).Conclusion The positive expression of E-cad and β-cat suggest their correlation with infiltration and development of gastric carcinoma.E-cad and β-cat can be used as valuable molecular markers for progression and prognosis of gastric carcinoma.To detect lymph nodal is valuble if we can not get primary carcinomas.Preoperative biopsy can predicts the lymph node status.关键词
