The Gender Effect on the Relationshiop between Internet Addiction and Emotional and Behavioral Problems in Adolescents

Abstract
Objective:The aim of this study was to assess the gender effect on the relationship between Internet addiction and emotional and behavioural problems in Chinese adolescents.Methods:The data come from the National Children's Study of China,which surveyed students in grades 7-9 and their parents(N=8753 with Internet experience) selected from 31 different provinces of mainland China.Results:①Boys were more likely to be Internet addicts than girls.②For both mental health problems and aggressive behaviour,Internet addicts had significantly higher scores than those of normal Internet users.③After controlling for the socio-demographical factors,an analysis of variance indicated that the interactions between gender and group were significant for depression and anxiety.Conclusion:The relationshiop between the internet addiction and mental healthy is possibly moderated by the gender,that is,in girls the internet addiction may be related with more emotional problems and indirect aggression,while in boys the internet addiction may be related to more behavioral problems.关键词
