Abstract

Objective:To investigate the influence of grandparenting on the cognitive development of children.Methods:146 children aged 36~59 months participated in this one-year longitudinal study.Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence Test-Vocabulary test,four batteries of EF tasks and two batteries of ToM tasks were used.Results:① 60.2% of the children lived with their grandparents,and 51.1% of them raised by the grandparents.②Those who raised solely by grandparents did as well on measures of verbal ability and executive functioning as children living in other alternative family forms,but scored lower on measure of theory of mind than others.③Children being raised solely by grandparents did not significantly differ on the development speed of theory of mind from children living in other alternative family forms.Conclusion:The impact of grandparenting on children's cognitive development cannot be generalized.Being raised mainly by grandparents but living with parents have no negative impact on children' s theory of mind,while being raised solely by grandparents do have a negative impact on children' s theory of mind,but not on the development speed of theory of mind.
