Cultivating Students’Pragmatic Competence in Translation Teaching of English Majors

Abstract
British pragmatic expert Jonny Thomas holds that pragmatic mistakes and socialpragmatic failures are prone to appear because of the lack of pragmatic competence. And pragmatic competence can be interpreted as a certain ability to use language effectively and appropriately in a specific context. It is even believed that pragmatic competence is a part of linguistic competence and social competence. However, there is a long-standing misunder⁃standing in China: as long as one is good at English, he/she can translate well. But in truth, only proficiency can⁃not make an excellent translator. How to cultivate students’pragmatic competence becomes an exigent problem to be solved. The author of this paper has found that, through her teaching experience, this issue can be addressed through the following procedures: (1)strengthening the students’pragmatic awareness by increasing cultural compar⁃ison between China and the Western cultures; ⑵ emphasizing the importance of context in translation; ⑶ cultivat⁃ing the students’pragmatic competence through translation practice. For instance, the students are asked to identi⁃fy and correct pragmatic mistakes in different translated versions of the same paragraph.关键词
