Expressing Meanings via Forms Methods and Applications of Integrating Cultural Pattern into Urban Spaces

Abstract
“Expressing meanings via forms”——integrating cultural schema into urban spaces is one of the characters in Chinese traditional urban construction. Ancient Chinese combined cultures with towns and cities for two purposes: one is to pursue beautiful things, another is to keep away from inauspicious things. Pattern and methods in which cultural patterns are integrated into urban spaces include the overal pattern and overal morphology method, element pattern and element combination method. Zhenyuan Civil and Military Tai Chi Town, Wenzhou Big Dipper Town, Cangpo Scholar’s Four Treasures Vilage are classical traditional town examples. Modern towns’ sizes and functions, and modern people’s aesthetic characteristics differ among ancient towns and ancient people. Tongji University established a system in urban planning theory and practice, and integrated cultural planning into master planning, detailed planning and project design, etc. This paper introduces practices in three modern towns which apply different approaches, namely Shuiru New Town, Fuyu County of Heilongjiang Province, Naxi Qilin New Town, Luzhou City of Sichuan Province and Ruyi Water Town, Lichuan County of Jiangxi Province.关键词
