Correlation between changes of brain iron content on MRI and neurodegenerative diseases

Abstract
Iron is the most abundant metal in the human body, it plays a critical role in the normal functioning neuron. Iron deficiency and iron overload both involve neurodegenerative diseases. The iron deficiency can be seen in restless legs syndrome, while the iron overload may occur in Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Understanding the brain iron content changes of neurodegenerative diseases has an important effect on early diagnosis and treatment planning. We reviewed the characteristics of spatial distribution of iron content change in various neurodegenerative diseases.关键词
