Abstract

Flow performance of a single-phase system in a stirred tank equipped with a grooved hydrofoil impeller (CBY-H) was studied with fluid dynamics software FLUENT (V6.3). A multiple reference frame (MRF) method and the RNG k-εturbulence model were chosen to simulate steady liquid flow performance and results were compared with that of a standard CBY impeller. Research shows that the CBY-H impeller improves liquid axial-flow performance, and the axial velocity around and below the blade area is larger than that of the standard CBY impeller. The study using the CBY-H impeller shows that high flow-speed liquid covers a wider area with more uniform velocity distribution. Moreover, the CBY-H impeller shows 18.4%less energy consumption and the convective heat transfer coefficient of the stirred tank with the CBY-H impeller is slightly higher than that of the standard CBY impeller. The correlation between Nu and Re was also obtained.
