Abstract

The cold crack sensitivity and fracture characteristics of ASTM4130 steel were investigated using implant test under the condition of shielded metal arc welding. The results showed that the critical failure stress is 344.46 MPa, 642.55 MPa and 806.11 MPa corresponding to no preheating, preheating temperature of 100℃and 200℃respectively. Without preheating and preheat to 100℃, the fracture is with the typical characteristics of brittle fracture;When the preheating temperature is 200℃, the fracture presents dimple fracture. The coarse grain zone organization mainly consists of martensite and bainite, with the preheating temperature increasing, the content of martensite decreases while the content of bainite increases. It is concluded that the cold crack sensitivity of ASTM4130 steel is closely related to the presence of the non-equilibrium microstructure in coarse grain zone.
